Java Looking Glass 3d project demo mistaken for Windows Vista?

Looking Glass 3d is an awesome project to build a next generation 3d desktop environment by Sun and the Java community on the java.net site, and is an excellent demonstration of the graphical capabilities of Java and the Java 3D API.

This week there was a copy of a video of Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems, demo’ing Looking Glass posted to YouTube.com, only that the caption for the video reads “Internal Review of Microsoft 3D Vista”.

What is even funnier is the comments posted to the site – “This is freaking awesome! Microsoft Rules!”.

Yes it is freaking awesome, and implemented in Java with no Windows anywhere in sight 🙂

Is Windows Vista Ready? Paul Thurrot of winsupersite.com – “No. God, no”

Despite being a fully paid up member of the Church of Microsoft Bashers, I do occaisionally take a peek over the fence to see what is going on in the Microsoft world. This year is of course the year that we’ve been promised the next great thing, as the successor to XP arrives in the form of Windows Vista. However, despite the long delays and 5 elapsed long years since XP was released, it would appear that all is not well with the next replacement of XP (that you are going to have to buy a new PC just to run).

Paul Thurrot of the Windows SuperSite often has some great articles with great insider info about upcoming new Microsoft releases. This month however, it appears that even this guy who appears to stand solidly on the Microsoft side of the fence has some very stong things to say about the current state of Vista. Is Windows Vista ready, you ask? Paul says ‘No. God, no’.

MSDN Library now also available for free download

Most of the MSDN Library content has already been available online for free, but there is some content that is available only to MSDN subscribers. Microsoft are now giving away the content as a free monthly download – see here for more details.

Microsoft seem to be on a spree of giving away free software right now, as they also just annouced that they are giving away their virtualization software, VirtualPC. Hoping to placate customers and developers frustrated by Vista being delayed for so long perhaps?
