Virginia Tech college has annouced performance improvements on their 1150 node Apple Mac supercomputer. Orginally called the ‘Big Mac’ it is now called ‘System X’
Their current performance is upto 12.25 teraflops, or 12 trillion calculations per second, up from 10 terraflops this time last year. November last year they were listed as number 3 in the Top500 supercomputer list.
IBM Rational have announced a whole list of new (or resurrected?) products combining and complementing the IBM Websphere range of products with the analysis and desig products from acquired company Rational.
There seems to be a large overlap in features between the products – read the descriptions on their site here.
Sun have a awesome demo video on their website of Jonathan Swartz showing their Project Looking Glass technology running, and wow does it look smart – like Mac OS X on steriods!
As far as I have read, the 3D desktop technology runs on J2SE 5.0 with the Java3D and Imaging APIs – the website says its only been tested on Linux so far, so I wonder if it runs on Windows? The developers release is available for download, so I might give it a try.
