PS3 European launch in March 2007 to come with ‘major firmware update’

The PS3 is due to launch in Europe and the rest of the world in March 2007, and according to the Sony Europe VP of Technology, Paul Holman, there will be a major firmware update released at the same time.

According to Holman there will be new major features and gaming capabilities added in the new firmware. Could it be that the ‘media center’ type functionality is coming? Remember the screen shots from Japan last year showing the PS3 displaying multiple HD outputs across the screen at the same time? Is the PS3 about to get Tivo like functionality?

Sony’s announced sale on TV’s over Thanksgiving weekend

Sony had an unannounced sale on some of their largest TVs over the Thanksgiving weekend, cutting upto $900 off their prices if you happened to visit a participating store or their online store over the weekend. Prices were back to normal after the weekend.

This may have been part to do with the lack of stock anywhere of their 46″ LCD XBR2 TV that I’ve been trying to purchase – a couple of weeks back some stores had them in stock when I was doing some initial research, but by this weekend, there wasn’t a single store within miles that had one in stock.
