Ethan Nicholas has an interesting article in his blog this week about ‘Understanding Weak References’.
I have known of weak, soft and phantom references for some time, but have never had a reason to use them. Nicholas gives a couple of good examples of how they can be used.
In a recent press conference, Sun mentioned that they will be making announcements regarding the bundling of the JRE in order to make distribution/installation of the JRE easier on other platforms, such as Linux.
Also, they mentioned they have one other major announcement regarding the JRE itself, possibly connected to Open Sourcing? Hmm, sounds interesting.
Sun will be making the announcements at JavaOne which starts May 16th in SF.
There is a post on the Artima site collecting questions for an upcoming interview with Linda DeMichiel, co-spec lead for JSR 220, Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0.
Although there aren’t many questions there so far, the interview should be an interesting read once they’ve collected some questions.
The JSR220 Public Final Draft spec for EJB3.0 was approved by the committee involved in it’s development, so expect to see final compliant implementations coming along soon.
JBoss are of course already there with their implementation integrated into 4.0.x of their App Server, and have been tracking changes to the spec with incremental releases implementing the latest version of the spec as it was written.
