PS3 1.6 firmware – Remote Play over internet added… or not?

The latest 1.6 firmware for the PS3 was rumored to include additional Remote Play support so you could browse your media collection (MP3s, photos etc) from across the internet on your PSP. If this feature was added it is not very obvious from the release notes for 1.6, although online discussions from various people claim it is working.

The description on the Sony site says the enhancement was to add Remote Play for 20GB versions, which do not include a WiFi access point, to be remote accessed via a WiFi access point on the same network. It does not state that you can now remote access your PS3 from any access point across the internet, although this is the feature people were expecting.

Hopefully in the next update…

devx.com – “Eclipse, NetBeans, and IntelliJ: Assessing the Survivors of the Java IDE Wars”

devx.com currently have a great article reviewing the 3 major Java IDEs that are in use today, Netbeans, Eclipse and IntelliJ.

The article reviews their development support for Swing, JSP/Struts, JavaServer Faces (JSF), and J2EE/EJB 3.0, and then compares the results. The results are an interesting mix, with each having it’s strong points and interestingly no clear winner overall covering all of these areas.

PS3 1.6 firmware with major enhancements for download on March 22

Sony will be releasing version 1.6 of the PS3’s firmware for download this Thursday, 3/22/6, one day ahead of the European PS3 launch.

This firmware update is a significant update due the the features rumored to be added in this release. The most interesting and potentially most useful new feature will be the ability to use the ‘Remote Play’ feature to stream your media content from your PS3 to your PSP remotely from any WiFi hotspot across the internet. The feature already exists but is currently limited to use within WiFi distance of your PS3. Background downloading of content from the online store is also likely to be added.
